Three roulette variants exist online. They have the same physical premise — ball on wheel, 36 numbered pockets plus zeros — and dramatically different house edges: French roulette 1.35% (best), European roulette 2.70% (good), American roulette 5.26% (avoid). The difference is one or two pocket positions on the wheel and one rule about even-money bets. European vs American — the double zero costs you 2.56%
European wheels have 37 pockets: 1–36 plus a single zero. American wheels have 38 pockets: 1–36 plus zero and double zero. That single extra pocket nearly doubles the house edge from 2.70% to 5.26%. If both variants are available at the same operator, never play American — there’s no in-game advantage to American roulette, only worse math. American roulette continues to exist online primarily because some players prefer the visual layout.
French roulette — the La Partage rule cuts even-money to 1.35%
French roulette uses the European 37-pocket wheel and adds the La Partage rule (or its variant En Prison): if the ball lands on zero on an even-money bet (red/black, odd/even, high/low), the player gets half their stake back instead of losing it entirely. This drops the effective house edge on even-money bets from 2.70% to 1.35%. Inside bets (single numbers, splits, corners) still run 2.70% — La Partage only applies to even-money outside bets. The strategy: at French roulette, bet only red/black or odd/even or high/low to get the low edge.
Inside bets, outside bets, and the math
All roulette bets at the same wheel have the same house edge (2.70% European, 5.26% American) — except for one specific bet at American wheels: the five-number “top-line” bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) runs 7.89% house edge, the worst on the table. The house edge is the same across all standard bets because the casino takes its cut from the payout structure: a single number win pays 35:1 instead of the true-odds 36:1 (Eu) or 37:1 (Am), distributing that gap evenly across all bet types.
Roulette systems — Martingale and friends
The Martingale system says: double your bet after every loss; the first win recovers all losses plus one unit. Mathematically this is correct for an infinite bankroll on a no-limit table — neither of which exists in reality. Real-world Martingale on red/black at European roulette has a 49% chance of busting a $100 bankroll within 7 consecutive losses (probability: 1.05%), and the table maximum at most casinos caps at 100× the minimum, which sets the maximum chain length at 7–8 doubles before you can no longer place the next bet. Betting systems do not change house edge; they only redistribute when losses occur. The Martingale converts many small wins into one catastrophic loss; expected value remains the same.
