KENO · 25-35% EDGE · 2026
Keno has the worst house edge of any commonly offered casino game — 25% to 35% depending on the operator and pay table. For comparison: blackjack 0.5%, baccarat 1.06%, even slot machines (4–12% edge) are dramatically better. Keno exists online because it’s simple to play and pays out occasional large jackpots — not because the math favors it in any way. This page covers the rare circumstances where keno makes sense and the much larger set where it doesn’t.
The math — why keno’s edge is so high
Standard keno asks the player to pick 1–10 numbers from a pool of 80; 20 numbers are then drawn. Payouts depend on how many of your picks match. The operator’s edge comes from underpaying every hit relative to true odds. A 10-spot pick (matching all 10 of your picks against 20 drawn from 80) has true odds of approximately 1 in 8.9 million; operators typically pay 100,000:1 to 250,000:1 — dramatically below true odds. Across all possible match counts at a typical pay table, the cumulative house edge calculates to 25–30% (and sometimes worse).
Keno variants — none change the basic math significantly
Operators offer multiple keno formats. Standard keno: 80-number pool, 20 drawn, house edge 25–35%. Caveman keno: bonus multipliers for hitting “egg” numbers — house edge usually 23–28%. Power keno: 4× multiplier if the 20th drawn number matches a player pick — house edge 20–25%. Cleopatra keno: bonus structure on certain hit patterns — house edge 22–27%. None of these variants drop the edge below 20%, which is still 40× worse than blackjack.
When keno can be reasonable
Two narrow circumstances make keno defensible. Bankroll preservation when playing for time: keno’s slow pace (one round every 30–60 seconds online) means low exposure-per-hour despite high per-bet edge. A $1 keno bet every minute is $60/hour wagered with ~$15/hour expected loss; a slot at $1 spins every 5 seconds is $720/hour wagered with ~$30/hour expected loss despite the slot’s lower edge. Jackpot lottery dynamics: keno’s high-pick variants offer extremely low-probability, high-payout outcomes that some players want as a lottery alternative. Mathematically still bad EV; psychologically functions like a lottery ticket.
