CRAPS · 0.18% AT BEST · 16% AT WORST · 2026
Craps has the widest spread of house edge of any casino game. Pass line plus full odds runs 0.18% — almost free play. Hard ways and one-roll prop bets run 9–16%. Same table, same dice, same dealer; the only variable is which bet you place. Below: the small handful of bets that produce craps’ famous low edge, and the much larger menu of bets that quietly transfer money to the casino at multiples of typical edge.
Pass line and the odds bet — where the low edge actually lives
The pass line bet runs 1.41% house edge — already among the better casino bets. The “odds bet” is the unique craps option that pays at true odds with zero house edge; you can place it after the come-out roll establishes a point. Operators allow odds bets at multiples of the pass line bet — 1×, 2×, 3×, 5×, 10×, even 100× at some online tables. The math: pass line plus 5× odds drops combined house edge to 0.33%; pass line plus 10× odds drops it to 0.18%. This is the lowest house edge available at any online casino game. The catch: you need a bigger bankroll to put 10× the pass line bet on the felt every roll, but the EV is unmatched.
Don’t Pass — slightly better than Pass
Don’t Pass runs 1.36% edge — fractionally better than Pass’s 1.41%. The math difference is tiny, but Don’t Pass plus odds bet (also true-odds, 0% edge on the laid odds) drops combined edge to 0.27% at 5× odds, 0.14% at 10× odds. Don’t Pass is socially awkward at live craps tables (you’re betting against the table) but online there’s no social cost. For the lowest possible house edge, Don’t Pass plus full odds is the optimum bet.
The bets that drain bankrolls — hard ways and props
The middle of a craps table is the high-edge zone. Hard ways (hard 4, hard 6, hard 8, hard 10): 9–11% edge. Big 6 / Big 8: 9.09% edge. Field bet: 5.56% edge depending on the 2/12 payout. Any 7: 16.67% edge — the worst regular bet on the table. Horn bets: 12.5% edge. These bets exist because they pay big — 30:1, 15:1, 9:1 — and the visual excitement masks the math. The pass-line/odds combination at 0.18% is mathematically dominant; everything else is paying for entertainment.
Online vs live craps — the same math, different texture
Online RNG craps simulates dice rolls digitally; live dealer craps streams a physical table. House edge math is identical. The differences: online RNG craps runs faster (more rolls per hour, more exposure), online tables typically support higher max odds multipliers (some allow 100× odds, vs 5–10× at most live tables), and live craps requires verbal bet placement that introduces minor friction. For optimal edge math, online RNG craps with high odds-multiplier support is mathematically the best craps option available.
