Blackjack at the right rules with basic strategy is the second-lowest house edge game offered at US online casinos — only full-pay video poker beats it. The rule variations that matter — in order of impact
Six variables move the house edge. Number of decks: single-deck (0.17% edge) → six decks (0.40%) → eight decks (0.49%). Dealer hits or stands on soft 17: stands (worse for casino, better for player by 0.20%); hits (worse for player). Double after split allowed: yes (player +0.14%) vs no. Surrender available: late surrender adds 0.07% to player; early surrender is a 0.62% gift (rarely offered online). Resplit aces: allowed (player +0.07%); not allowed. Basic strategy is mandatory, not optional
“Basic strategy” is the mathematically optimal play for every possible blackjack hand combination — there’s no judgment involved, only memorization. A player using basic strategy faces ~0.5% house edge at standard rules. A player playing intuitively faces ~2.0% edge — a four-fold increase. Basic strategy is published as a single chart for any rule set; it takes about 90 minutes to memorize and saves the player roughly 1.5% on every hand played, indefinitely. Side bets — the high-edge revenue products
Every blackjack table runs side bets — Perfect Pairs, 21+3, Lucky Lucky, Insurance — that look like small extras and run 5–10% house edge. They exist to raise the table’s effective edge from 0.5% to 1.5%+ for players who can’t resist them. Insurance is the most-marketed side bet and statistically one of the worst: you’re betting that the dealer’s hole card is a 10-value (probability ~30.8% with one deck visible) at 2:1 payout (which would require 33.3% probability to break even). The math is permanent negative EV. The only side bet with rare positive-EV moments is Lucky Ladies under specific count conditions; for online RNG play, no count is possible.
Live dealer blackjack vs RNG blackjack
Live dealer blackjack runs slightly worse rules typically (no surrender, dealer hits soft 17, sometimes 6:5 — avoid). RNG blackjack often offers better rules but plays much faster, increasing exposure per hour.
